Wives and Partners Views
Sharon Johnson
Sharon is the partner to current Head Coach of Bletchley Ladies, Ian Nobes*, never had anything to do with the game or knew anything about rugby until meeting up with Ian. Now a very keen enthusiast of the game and loves the Club and everything to do with it and knows what it’s like to live with a rugby fanatic who lives the game. She worked out pretty soon in their relationship that if it was to continue she would have to get to grips with rugby. She recently had a conversation with Ian about her commitment and love of the game and Bletchley RUFC where she told him that even if they were to split up she would still be involved, she couldn’t give it up. “Tonight I’m dressing up as an angel with wings and halo for the Club Christmas do, where else could you do that sort of thing at 54, my age - behave like a big kid and really enjoy it!”
Sharon is engaged with the day-to-day life of the Club; she does all sorts of things help out and will continue to do so with gusto. She supports the game, sells raffle tickets, and works behind the bar, in the kitchen and anywhere else whenever needed. When the Ladies first started they had no kit so Sharon went out and got sponsorship and the Ladies had a team strip and financial support to continue. Once during a game she drove a young lad to hospital, Oxford A&E, when he split the top of his lip open up to his nose, a young 22 year old, 6’4”, good looking in his team kit and sat with him in the waiting area, when he was finally called to see the Doctor he asked if she would accompany him (Sharon is seen as a trusted mother figure to the players). “You forget that because they’re so strapping and what they do on the field and all that, that they’re still only young boys really”
*A ’rugby wife’ – Ian at home has a tv in each room connected to Sky etc and will have different games on in each room and wanders between them and when he watches a game he’s often seen throwing a pretend ball as if participating in the game. Ian has been a member for over 40 years he’s been a player for Bletchley several years in 1st XV and Captain, he began playing for the Club in 1975-76. Generations of Nobes have since played, Ian’s brother Simon (who is the current Club Manager) his sons (Matt is 1st XV Captain) and now his niece all play for Bletchley. Ian is currently the Ladies Team Head Coach and they‘ve celebrated great success 2014/15 season and have remained unbeaten for 18 months to the present, a fantastic achievement.
Verity Robinson, Bletchley Ladies Captain, says Sharon is a proactive supporter of the Ladies Team and is known among the team as their ‘Agony Aunt’.

Brenda Price
Brenda’s interest in sport was only really when she was at School where she played Hockey and Netball for the County
Brenda and husband (both over 70) had no involvement with the game or any sport until introduced to rugby by their Son-in-Law, who played for Bletchley and now their grandsons play at Bletchley as well. The older grandson has given up the game as he’s a musician and was concerned about damaging his hands, but he still comes down to watch home games and enjoys the after game Club house atmosphere.
Brenda and her husband come to the Club regularly as supporters of the Club and the game, ”we love the game, the atmosphere in the Club, it’s become our social life – it’s such a friendly welcoming game and all generations and families mix in a safe and comfortable environment”
She much prefers it to football and has never had and still doesn’t have any interest in that game only Rugby, a quote in a paper after the Rugby World Cup recently, struck a chord and sums the difference up...... ‘Footballers spend 90 minutes pretending they’re hurt, Rugby players spend 80 minutes playing as if they’re NOT hurt’
