“Having enjoyed sport all his life, Keith has been involved with Olney RFC, captaining various teams and has been the Honorary Secretary, during which time he along with others was instrumental in securing Lottery Funding for the floodlights. He turned gamekeeper when he joined the Referees’ Society enjoying many seasons as a referee and latterly as an assessor. Having played tennis since eleven years old, he remains an active tennis player, despite having had two total knee replacements!”

Cllr Keith McLean. Mayor of Milton Keynes is renowned and often proudly photographed wearing his Cerise and French Grey striped, Olney RUFC, blazer to official functions.
The Mayor was an official member of the “RWC 2015 Pack”, he was interviewed and accepted before becoming Mayor. This put him in the unique position of being the only Mayor of a RWC 2015 Host City to also be a member of “The Pack”, whose members numbered around 6,000 throughout England & Wales and were tasked with many functions hand had a specific uniform. In Milton Keynes these were mainly official RWC 2015 ‘meet and greet’ duties at the railway station, Stadium:MK and other public interfaces. England Rugby granted Keith a unique dispensation for one-day only, to wear both “The Pack” uniform and his Mayoral Chain of Office. He officiated as Mayor of Milton Keynes at the Japan v Samoa game at Stadium:MK on Sat 3rd October.
Background
Born in Glasgow, he moved south to Welwyn Garden City at the age of 4 and began playing rugby at Secondary School which continued through to College and University in Birmingham, where he played with Aston Old Edwardians.
Keith went on to employment with Bourneville (Cadbury’s) and played for the Bourneville Team
He left Bourneville moving to a new job in Manchester which didn’t leave much time for rugby but he did turn out and play occasionally.
His career then took him to a job in Bedford and whilst he and his wife were staying in a hotel in Turvey, during the transition period of finding a home, he wondered what he could do on a Saturday? .... He joined Olney RUFC Sept 1977. In those days the Club house was The Two Brewers in the High Street. He was a team member of the First XV which won the North Bucks Shield in 1980 and turned out regularly for the Club 1st XV until 1984, the year the Club house was finally opened. He won Clubman of the Year for 1984/85 season.
Having sustained knee injuries through playing the game (and subsequently two knee replacement operations) Keith went on to become and undertook refereeing duties for the East Midlands Referee Society. Keith has remained a stalwart supporter of the Club and is proud of having been involved in getting pitch lighting installed at the Club ground.
