Sharon Johnson and the Nobes family
Living with a rugby fanatic
Sharon is the partner of current Bletchley Ladies Head Coach, Ian Nobes, she never had anything to do with the game or knew anything about rugby until meeting up with Ian. Now a keen enthusiast of the game she has come to love the Club and everything to do with it and knows what it’s like to live with a rugby fanatic who ‘lives’ the game. Sharon worked out pretty soon that if their relationship was to continue she would have to get to grips with this thing called rugby. Sharon stated that even if they were to split up she would still be involved with the Club, she couldn’t give it up.
“Tonight I’m dressing up as an angel with wings and halo for the Club Christmas do, where else could you do that sort of thing at 54, my age - behave like a big kid and really enjoy it!”
Sharon is involved in the day-to-day life of the Club undertaking all manner of things, helping out with gusto. Supporting games from the sidelines, selling raffle tickets, working behind the bar and in the kitchen and anywhere else... whenever and wherever she’s needed. When the Ladies Team first started in 2008 they had no kit, so Sharon went out and got sponsorship raising enough money for a team strip and additional finance to keep the Ladies team going.
A trusted and respected Club member Sharon is often seen as a mother figure by young players; during one away game she drove a lad to hospital (Oxford A&E) after he’d split the top of his lip open up to his nose. A young 22 year old, 6’4”, good looking in his team kit, Sharon sat with him in the waiting area. When he was finally called to see the Doctor he asked if she would accompany him!
“You forget that because they’re so strapping and what they do on the field and all that, that they’re still only young boys really”
Partner, Ian, has a TV in each room at home which are connected to any broadcast of rugby, he will have different games on in each room and wanders between them. When he watches a game he’s often seen throwing a pretend ball as if participating in the game. Ian has been a Bletchley RFC member for over 40 years spending several years in 1st XV and became Captain. He began playing for the Club in 1975-76 and generations of Nobes have played - Ian’s brother Simon (current Club Manager) his sons (Matt is 1st XV Captain) and now his niece all play for Bletchley. Ian is currently the Ladies Team Head Coach and they‘ve celebrated great success 2014/15 season and have remained unbeaten for 18 months to the present, a fantastic achievement.
